Public school administrators are facing the prospect of deeper budget cuts in cities and states nationwide. Meanwhile, schools with fewer resources are challenged to comply with the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which guarantees "free appropriate" education to all disabled students including the growing number of students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In addition, parents are pressuring schools to either comply with the IDEA or face legal action.

One of the most common initial red flags reported by parents of children with autism is that they suspect their child may be deaf because he or she no longer responds to his or her name, and does not look at them when they speak. However, the lack of response or eye contact can point to an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

C.H.I.L.D. will hold a free workshop on autism at 7 p.m. on May 5 in Verona.
The workshops is called "Using a Web-based Platform to Deliver Autism Treatment Tools to Parents and Professionals: An overview for clinicians, parents, medical professionals, educators, social workers and others involved with the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders."
